The medical field has ramped up again for the past decade. Nurses for example, have flocked everywhere. A large waive of professionals are produced each year to suffice the need in the healthcare society and has continually grown until today.
Many factors are inevitable in life. This pertains to the daily occurrences of things that are beyond our control. Examples of these are birth, death and sickness. These are the factors that create the need for health professionals to combat whatever problems that may arise and affect other human life. Since these things are constant, many have chosen to pursue a career in the medical field. One example of the people needed in the health field is the radiology technician.
What They Do
A radiology technician, also called as radiologic technologist, medical radiation technologist and radiographer is a person who conducts analysis of the human body through radiographic images. Each technician has their own sub-specialty. An example of this is nuclear medicine which uses radioactive traces to examine the body and its function. Some radioisotopes are administered in treating diseases like cancer and many others.
Some technicians specialize in magnetic resonance imaging commonly called as MRI and builds a 3D or 2D map of tissue types in the body. Others focus on a certain part, such as those who specialize in Mammography. This kind of radiography produces an image of the human breast through low-dose x-ray. Radiotherapy, on the other hand can shrink, and sometimes eradicate cancerous cells and its growth in the human body through radiation. There are many other specializations in the radiology field depending on the major one would choose to take.
Training
Being a radiologist can be quite challenging. They study and train in human anatomy and physiology, nuclear physics, mathematics and others. They run through certification exams and should pass certain requirements like criminal records clearance and accreditation of the school they graduated from. This ensures patient safety as they perform fieldwork. Another challenge faced by technicians is the risk of toxicity and having skin cancer especially if the facility they are in to lack safety gears for radiation monitoring and shielding.
Salary
Despite the risks, many still pursue a career in this field due to the career growth available. There is little competition in this field as compared to the number of nurses and doctors worldwide. Most of the time, people under this profession also earn well than other high paying jobs. Each radiologist can roughly earn $20,000 to $50,000 annually. Salary varies on his or her experience in the field.
Being a radiology technician may not be as easy. Good education and a lot of training may be a part of it. Yet, once one has fully embraced the challenge of this career, it truly pays off the effort.
